Gas oil, also known as red diesel, gained popularity due to the red dye marker added to it in the 1960s. This marker helped authorities quickly identify vehicles running on gas oil. Originally used for heating, gas oil became a popular fuel for vehicles as they became more widespread in the early 20th century, even before natural gas became widely available.
